Loren W. Gast
Loren W. GastFlagLoren W. Gast, 82, of Prospect died at 8:30 PM Saturday, March 15, 2008 at Community Healthcare Center following a brief illness.

He was born on July 10, 1925 at his parents home in Prospect.  He was the son of the late Paul B. and Irene E. (Dodrill) Gast.

He graduated from Prospect High School in 1943 and joined the Army.  He served in the 1st Infantry Division (The Big Red One), 26th Infantry Regiment.  He was involved in the invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944 (D-Day).  Later in the European Theatres, Loren fought in the Battle of the Bulge at the Huertgen Forest.  For his valor in combat, he was awarded, among other medals, the Bronze Star Medal (Second Oak-Leaf Cluster).  He received an honorable discharge and came home.

He married Dolores E. Pitts on September 25, 1947 and they celebrated sixty years of marriage last fall.  She survives in Prospect.  Loren worked at the Universal Cooler, the Marion Engeineer Depot, and retired after twenty years from the Defense Construction Supply Center in Whitehall.

He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Prospect and served many years as a deacon.  He was also a member of the Battle Run Fire Department and the American Legion Post 368 in Prospect.

An avid sports fan, Loren enjoyed watching his sons and grandsons participate in music and athletics.  He especially enjoyed watching his grandsons, Andy and Josh, play basketball in college.  Loren himself was quite an athlete having participated in basketball, track, tennis and golf.  He loved playing ping-pong and going boating.  He also enjoyed traveling to military reunions and eating out.

He will be sadly missed by his loving wife Dolores, daughter Judy Theresa Gast of Columbus; two sons, Bruce Michael (Bonnie) Gast of Prospect; Brian Stephen (Andrea) Gast of Brookville, Indiana; two grandchildren, Andrew Michael Gast and Joshua Michael Gast of Delaware, both sons of Bruce and Bonnie.

Loren was preceded in death by his brother, Paul B. Gast Jr.

Funeral services will begin at 11:00 AM on Thursday, March 20, 2008 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Prospect.  His family will greet friends one hour prior to the service.  Special music will be performed by Tal Burkett and Carol Birchfield.  Pastor Russell Makant will conduct the funeral service followed immediately by a military graveside service at Prospect Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Bruce Gast, Brian Gast, Andrew Gast, Joshua Gast, Marc Ahmay and Dick Gearhiser.

Memorial gifts may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 200 E. Water St., Prospect, OH  43342.

Grandma D.,
I am so sorry.  We will miss Loren so much.  Out mowing the lawn with you sweeping the sidewalk, raking leaves and my kids playing in them and then helping to rake them again, and our special Halloween visits with the kids.  I have so many memories I can't list them all.  You just know we are thinking of you and the family and are here for you.

Love,
Kelley (Brannan) McCutcheon

Dear Deloris (better known at Grandma D)and family, our hearts are heavy with sorrow for your loss.  Loren was always a good neighbor, he always took a moment to stop and wave and speak when he'd see us out and about.  He was always so good about letting our kids and then our grand kids play in his big yard.  But every once in awhile he'd step outside to remind the boys to watch the trees and Grandma D's flowers while they where mostly playing football and running around.  We enjoyed listening to him talk about his tour of duty during WWI while sitting on his front porch, he was one very proud and brave man.
We'll never forget shortly after moving here Loren & Deloris gave us 2 AC units because it was such a hot summer and they refused to take anything for them, boy they were very much appreciated.  Loren would always call and thank us for the birthday card we sent him every year like it was something special and unexpected.  He will truly be missed.  May he rest in peace.  You will all be in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.     Love, John & Linda
