Darlene Ann Gilliland
Darlene Ann GillilandDarlene Ann Gilliland (Burling), born in Bucyrus on March 26, 1941 to Alvin and Reatha M. (Ward) Burling, passed away on Monday evening, April 20, 2009 at the Gables at Green Pastures in Marysville after a brief struggle with cancer.

On July 18, 1959 she married Charles Gilliland.  They were long-term residents of York Center.

No life should be summed up by so few words, certainly not someone as feisty and cherished as Darlene. She silently enriched the lives of not only her family but of families throughout the local community and beyond. Though she never personally met the people she helped, she selflessly spent the past decade making handmade baby quilts with the Marysville First United Methodist Church Christian Quilters and Crazy Quilters of Union County distributed to hospitals and other organizations.

A retired beautician, she found her greatest joy in her children’s achievements.  Though she rarely recognized the merit of her own, she excelled at many things. She enjoyed travelling, was an exceptional quilter, participated in long-distance cycling into her early 60s, planted beautiful gardens, and managed to keep her little family firmly together.  She will be missed and never forgotten.

She is survived by her husband, Charley; a son, David of Marysville; three daughters, Debbie (Everett) Griffith of Farmington, New Mexico; Pamela (Steve) Kalb of Kenton; and Jamie (Ramon) Perez of Ostrander; eight grandchildren, one great-grandchild, two younger sisters, Kathy (Boyd) Studer of Attica; Jeannie Klingenberger and  mother, Reatha M. Burling, both of Canyon Lake, California.

Funeral services will be held Friday, April 24, 2009 at 11:00 AM in the Stofcheck-Ballinger Funeral Home, Richwood with Pastor Joe Rhea officiating.  Graveside services will be at 1:00 PM the same day in Nevada Cemetery.  Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM on Thursday at the Funeral Home in Richwood.

Memorial gifts may be made to First United Methodist Church Christian Quilters, 207 S. Court Street, Marysville, OH  43040.
