Joseph Arthur Weygandt
FlagJoseph Arthur Weygandt passed away peacefully at the age of 86 on May 29, 2012 leaving behind his wife, whom he called his “greatest blessing”, Patricia Copeland Weygandt, and their five children, Jay (Ginny), Dale (Denise), Lee (Cathy), Connie (Nathan) Bush, and Dean (Trudi); eleven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Born on February 16, 1926 in Springfield, Joe had a lifelong interest in HAM radios.  He got his first radio at the age of 14.  His now Silent Key is W8VDD.  He was active on the airwaves all his life, and in recent years was a member of the HAM club of Marion.

His love of country led him to join the Navy on his 18th birthday, and he served for two years as a radiocorpsman on the USS Breton.  He remained in contact with his fellow sailors until his death.

His interest in radio led him to a job as an engineer with WTOL radio and television, where he worked for almost fifty years.  After retiring in 1991, he traveled the country with his wife, seeing all fifty states and parts of Canada.  Joe had experienced Japan during WWII, and he and his wife have visited Europe.

Joe’s faith sustained him all of his life, and he eventually settled in LaRue, where he joined Trinity Lutheran Church, Marion.  He had been an active member of the First English Lutheran Church in Toledo for many years, and he served TLC in many of the same capacities: committees, council, and anything else that needed doing.

Beyond his love of family, faith and radio, Joe also enjoyed organ music.  He has been honored for his work helping to rebuild, restore and maintain the Wurlitzer at the Palace Theatre in Marion and was a member of the Ohio Theater Organ Club.

His wishes were to donate his body to science.

His family will receive friends beginning at noon, prior to a memorial service at Trinity Lutheran Church, 4535 Smeltzer Road, Marion, OH  43302 at 12 noon on Sunday, June 3, 2012.  In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in his memory to Trinity Lutheran Church in Marion or to Heartland Hospice Services, 685 Delaware Ave., Marion, OH 43302-5073.

The family is being assisted by Stofcheck-Ballinger Funeral Home, LaRue.  Condolences and remembrances may be expressed at www.stofcheck-ballinger.com

What a great man, a name I have never forgotten.  I went to work for WTOL in 1962 at 16 as a part time announcer. Joe was such a help and mentor to me. The first Christmas I was at the station he asked me to push a button back in the control room. Christmas music came from one speaker, Christmas wishes from another on the other side of the room, more music from somewhere else and when it was all over a "Charlie Brown" type Christmas tree turned on on top of one of the equipment racks.  In those days that was technologically amazing and it was a Christmas greeting I will remember forever.

From the "Checker" car to the long antenna on the top of headphones he created for one of the announcers to wear at the Lucas County Fair (He had complained that he needed better reception), Joe always had a quiet was of making us laugh.

My condolences for your loss.  You were blessed with a wonderful family member.

To the Weygandt Family,

I am truly saddened to hear of the loss of your Father. I remember him as a joyful, loving man of God. His contagious smile and patient ways endeared me to him, since I was always quite a trial. The kindness and blessings that he gave to all will always be cherished.
