John R. Mead
John R. MeadElectricianJohn R. Mead, 58 of Richwood died Sunday, February 8, 2015 at the James Cancer Hospital at The Ohio State University following a five-month battle with cancer.  He was born September 4, 1956 in Marysville to Charles B. “Bert” and Phyllis A. (Skidmore) Mead.

He was a member of the Richwood First United Methodist Church and a 1974 graduate of North Union High School.  A proud volunteer firefighter in Richwood for 26 years, he was also a volunteer EMT for 13 years.  John had worked for Amstutz and Hedges Electric for 16 years.  After that he worked for Ray Lewis and Sons of Marysville as a maintenance man for 13 years until the plant closed.  He then followed the Lewis family to the Timberview Golf Course where he was working until the time of his death.

John was a talented handy man who was willing and able to fix about anything.  He was a hard worker and ran his own business on the side, Mead Contracting, which many people in the area depended on.  He never knew a stranger and anyone who knew him considered him their friend.  He enjoyed furniture making and in his younger days, fishing, hunting, trap shooting and playing softball.

On April 26, 1997 in Richwood he married the former Pamela S. Wilcox and she survives.  He is also survived by his mother, Phyllis Mead, Richwood; two sons, Joshua A. (Megan) Mead, Delaware; Joseph M. (Kristen Kleman) Mead, Columbus; two step-daughters, Mindy (Chad) Fitch, Richwood; Megan (Michael Hartsock) Patrick, Columbus; a granddaughter, Kayla Mead; step-grandchildren, Bryce, Blake and Brittany Fitch; a sister, Lisa Mead, Richwood; three sisters-in-law, Nancy Baxter, Houston, Texas; Kathy (Tom) Jackson, Richwood; Teresa Hutchings, Raymond; a brother-in-law, Randy Wilcox, Houston, Texas; mother and father-in-law, Robert and Edna Wilcox, Richwood; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Thursday, February 12, 2015 at 1:00 PM at the Richwood First United Methodist Church with Pastor Joe Rhea officiating.  Burial will follow in Price Cemetery.  Pallbearers will be fellow Fire and EMS volunteers.  Friends may call on Wednesday from 4 to 7 PM at the Stofcheck-Ballinger Funeral Home, Richwood.

Memorial gifts may be made to Northern Union County Fire and EMS Association, 602 N. Franklin Street, Richwood, OH  43344 or the First United Methodist Church, 18 S. Fulton Street, Richwood, OH  43344.

To John's family,
It has been a long time since I spent any time with John. Years and miles do that. But I remember him with fondness. He has been one of the good guys. One of my special memories was the time he was on TV's Bowling for Dollars and won those Coca Cola pants! He was a star! May the Lord bless all of you at his loss from your daily lives.

Although we did not know John Mead personally, I felt like we did through his son, Joey. He held his dad up high on a pedestal and loved him very much. My prayers and heart go out to all of the family. May God give all of you the strength to get through this very sad time.

Our entire family lost a very good friend Sunday evening. A friend who never said no, no matter when he was called. A friend who could do anything and everything!  John was one "hell" of a man that I was proud to call my "friend".
Our prayers and most sincere sympathies to Pam and John's entire family. May you all be very proud of a fine man!  He will be greatly missed.

John Mead was a marvelous person to know. He was a ready conversationalist who shared his thoughts always with a sense of amusement about what he was saying. He had a vast reservoir of knowledge about how things worked and how to fix them when they failed to work. He was a joy to know. He will be missed in so many ways by so many.
